Unhappy al's

for those in the DC-VA area--just to let you know al's GH burned down on friday, so he's on hiatus for the moment.

OMG. I was just there back in February. That place was so nice and huge! I'm in shock!

Not to mention he showed me some of his older orchids that he's been growing for years. I hope he was able to salvage some of them at least. That's really upsetting.

Evidently most of his phals are ok but he suffered losses with his paphs.

I hope he rescued his Phal. gigantea - a friend sent pictures to me of his plant and it is gorgeous.

He told me that he's had that Phal gigantea for 16 years. That's the first one I thought of when I read this post. He also showed me a few others that he's had for quite some time.

and while we're on the subject--he made a cross he called phal millie's pure heart (i think); it was a hilo lip crossed on a yellow (su an cricket, IIRC). some of the offspring were coming out purple, some red--and then, there's mine

That is beautiful. I really love the coloring.

I just went there back in February, and got my Phal schilleriana from Al's. It's just now blooming, and is beautiful. There's a picture of it in a thread I started today

That's a real shame, I had just looked at some Phals on his website a few days ago. Janet that Phal. Millie's Pure Heart is amazing. I hope that his losses weren't extreme, that Phal. gigantea sounds amazing.

Nature has formed orchid flowers in such a way that, unless they make us laugh, they surely excite our greatest admiration." Jacob Breynius

I really like the white lip janet - very unusual.

The pic of the gigantea was amazing. I can only dream mine will eventually bloom let alone when an award.

I like Al's. I'm very sorry to hear about what happened to him. As the ad says, "Life comes at you fast" sometimes. Hope he is able to recover completely.

Just checked out the Brennan site-- they have some very special phals there. Thanks for the url, Janet.

From info that I found on another board, it was an old florescent lamp that shorted, and the GFCI didn't operate correctly.

do you read abpo? he said on there that the fire investigator may think it was a different fixture. marvy.

it's such a bummer--he always has such lovely stuff in there, and he's worked so hard on it... i remember reading his blow by blow of getting the greenhouse extension up. -sigh-
