Orchid Collection up for Grabs!

Hi everyone! I was stumbling around online and was browsing a local site. It turns out that a guy who attends the PSU - CEPOS show each year is reducing his personal collection. I'm not related to him nor do I have anything to gain, but I have bought some plants from him at the PSU show before. I've just asked for my box, and thought I'd share the secret.

Wow!

I sure wish my alternator and battery didn't go out yesterday or I would have been all over this.

The offer is still good as I emailed the seller last night

The link is

By the way, this is not linking to another forum as the moderator gave a reason why the link was last deleted. Kijiji is a community site owned by eBay. They are trying to compete with the likes of Craigslist.

I just got my box today! I requested all Paphs, and I received 8 blooming sized plants in good condition! Considering that I only had one paph before, this was a pretty good way to jumpstart my collection. Here's the list:

1. Paph Doctor Toot
2. Paph Hamlet's Quest
3. Paph Odette's Glory
4. Paph (Macabre 'Black Lace' x Gloriosum 'Halelujah')
5. Paph (Gothic Garden 'Pillars' x Black Rook 'Battlement')
6. Paph Petula's Mystery
7. Paph Macbeth's Ghost
8. Paph Friedrich von Hayek

Nice! So you paid a little over $5 per plant including shipping? Can't beat that. I should be getting my catts today. Can't wait!

In the for what it's worth department - I got TEN plants delivered to me last thursday. Yes, that makes them $5 per plant including shipping. Six of the plants were good sized and had previously bloomed, four of the plants had 3-6new growths of them. Three of the plants were very small with limited root systems - it will take some time to "salvage" these. Out of the 10 plants I'd say only 2-3 of the larger ones had good remaining roots. I don't know if it was the shipping/delay time in crowded sphag bags or what, but overall the root systems were disappointing. They will all need to be closely watched to bring them to a point of good health in the months to come (hopefully). With that said, I still considered this a "good deal" - for a person with few paphs it as a nice way to build a collection up a little with minimal finances. mike

Mike,

I received my box last Thursday, too. Four out of nine vandaceous orchids, roots weren't in great condition. One out of four oncidiums has the same condition. The one paph didn't have it either. That's why, I think, the main plant broke off rather easily from the root system. On top of it all, I found some mealybugs on some of them. This evening, I sprayed (second application since last Thurs) worm tea on all of them.

At any rate, this was a good deal (yes...a good way to build up a collection). Fortunately, the vandas that have good root systems are ones I want to keep. I just hope the paph will survive because I really like the blooms I saw. As for the oncidiums, I'm neutral.

When my box was in transit, we were in the middle of a heat wave here in Pennsylvania, which probably accounts for the fact that they all seemed a little limp. It's been almost 2 weeks since then, and they seem to be doing well now.

hey guys...

i got a box of vandas. he sent me 14, 3 or 4 are in good size and the rest are keikis. the roots are alright, most of them. they are all tagged, yet i can't find any pictures online. maybe you guys can help me find some pictures, i'll post them later... i've found two- paraphaleonopsis laycokii and neostylus lou sneary. the paraphal is adorable. it was a nice bargain, but i wouldn't buy another box. now, i got too many small vandas.

When I got my box of Paphs there was 7 plants. 2 in good shape two with browning leaves, one limp and dead, the rest all had rotten roots. I emailed back that I was VERY disappointed in these plants. He sent me back 20.00. So all in all it was still worth a try.

jbigio,

That's good he refunded $20, since most of the plants you received weren't in the best conditions.

Since most of mine are in good condition, I'm not going to bother emailing him... All in all, I still got a good deal -- about $5 per plant. However, I don't think I'll buy a box again from anyone else. Unless, of course, it's someone I know and trust.
