Arrival Pictures

Amid an awful week and a blinding snow storm, a ray of sunshine has arrived from Florida. Fingers are tightly crossed that my new babies didn't get too chilled along the way. The poor leaves were so cold.

Here they are...

Hybrid Project Plant - Phal. Naples Night.....

Masdevallia Ted Khoe - HAD to have it!

Onc. Elfin Lure 'Fireball' x Onc. Kitty Crocker 'Rose Giant' - but I'm pretty sure there are two plants in the tiny pot. See close up of blooms.

And I had to throw in a picture of Max (Monster Kitty - 29lbs) on his throne, a papasan stool.

Geesh - I can't decide if I want to separate the two Tolumnia or not. I know Jenny left hers together... what have others done? Opinions?

I would separate them. I like a nice full plant, but I think that down the road, you would have 2 nice full plants that each would have their own blooms. Two different blooms in one container might look a little odd. It's just my humble opinion.
BTW- I LOVE Max!!!! Lots of cute kitties tonight! I'll have to post pics of my 2 sometime.

Good lookin cat Viv! 29LBs.... tank! I'm leaving my T. together in the one pot for now. I'm afraid in my conditions mounting is out of the question and if I repot them then I'll end up rotting the roots. I'll move it when I absolutely have to.. By the way.... I hope it warms up soon; I'll be in Durango for the Iron Horse Classic for Memorial Day weekend and I don't want to be riding in the snow!

LOL - one nod to separate and one nod to leave them - LOL. I'm thinking that separating them now is going to be a whole lot easier than when they've grown more roots. But I'll give them a few days to warm up to their new environment!

Max is GINORMOUS! He's a beauty alright... except when he wants to sit in my lap and kneed my stomach. It actually hurts.

Durango, Memorial Day. Who knows!?! I have pics of the kids watching the Fourth of July Parade in Breckenridge whilst it's snowing like crazy!

My seven baby plants arrived yesterday, but it is usually too dark when I get home from work to take any pictures. I will have to wait until the weekend to get some good pics. I want to cast another vote for leaving the Tolumnia undivided. It has had enough of a shock by traveling up to you from Fla. The plant Jerry sent me has only one spike, but it has three branches off that spike. The flower display is absolutely awesome The spike got bent (bent but not broken) on the way up here. Scotch tape made those fragile branches good as new. All I can say is that the multiple flower sprays are breathtaking! You really have to see it...You can divide in a few years if you want...

Vivienne, if they were recently put in the pot, then it'll be easy to separate. I don't think the plants will suffer though if you do lose some roots if, you can untangle them, they grow very fast. I've got a few pots with more than one plant also and, completely different tolumnias. I personally like it and think overall, that it adds interest and curiosity to the arrangement.

Viv~ At first I was going to separate, but then I thought about it and left it alone so that I could have the contrasting colors. I just wrote the names on the tag of what was in the pot. I didn't think it would look right at first while I was doing it, but when I was finished, I'm glad I did it.

Oh I can't decide. LOL And, while there are two plants, there is only one tag.

Viv- I have one with two in the same pot, too. I was going to plant my three Tolumnia in one basket to begin with. I ordered a 4 inch basket, but, now think the 4 inch basket is too small. I am looking for the display value down the road. For some reason I think different colors of this plant would be interesting together.

This morning my thinking on the Tolumnia is... I will let it decide. I plan to at least repot it with some sphag so if it easily shows me the different plants then separate it is. As it is, I can't even get a good count on the # of growths in the little pot (a good thing). I love orchids!!!

My Tolumnia is already spitting another growth at me!! Cute little bugger.

Ellen~ I thought the 4" basket was going to be small as well, but after I battled the plant into the basket, there was some room to play with. Optical illusion.

So the big question is.... Can the Tolumnia go outside with the rest of my Oncidiums once the temps come up or do I have to keep inside?

I don't know the answer to that one Greg. I know I do plan to keep my two Tolumnia indoors.

That's right, I separated them. It was very easy to see the separate plants once all the charcoal was removed. They came apart nicely. 2 growths on one and 3 growths on the other!!! Will get pictures taken later today.

Alrighty, as mentioned above, I did separate the two Tolumnia. And now, I'm calling upon those of you who purchased Tolumnia (Rdcm., Onc.) from Jerry to help me identify.

There was only one tag in the little pot, but two plants. Which goes with the tag? Did anyone get one that looks like either of these?
The tag reads: Onc. Elfin Lure x Onc. Kitty Crocker

Tolumnia #1

Tolumnia #2

I'm in Florida kazjak and keep mine outdoors. Mine grow and grow and grow and especially during the hot, humid weather. I keep them in sphag. and love a good drying out between watering. They can be grown bare rooted and misted or in sphag, they're very easy growers. This is one Onc. that loves lots of light, which I find to be true with all equitant Oncidiums.

Vivienne, you may find that these 2 different looking plants, are exactly the same. Depending on when they both bloomed, these little toulimnias might end up looking exactly alike. One thing interesting is that they take on different patterns and their colors change as they mature on the spike. I wish I had a pic to show you but just watch them and you'll notice them taking on different patterns and color intensities.

I'll keep an eye on them but I'm pretty sure they are different. Both have blooms that are at their end. And they were definitely different plants when I repotted them.

I hope they both grow up and bloom as nicely as yours do!!! I love how your little guys arch.

Or are you saying, Sandra, that they both could be variations on the same tag??

They look great, Vivienne! I think they'll look really great once they're established. They sure look like different plants to me- similar enough to cause confusion, but I think they are definitely different. I think that if you had them together, they would look like one plant that wasn't blooming consistently. If they were really different, it would be obvious that they were different and it would be pretty! Did that make sense?

I'm not doubting that they're 2 plants but can be the same crosses, is all. Also, at least with mine, they never bloom looking exactly like the previous blooms. The colors usually get more intense and the patterns change, somewhat, not with all but with the many I have, I'd say almost half of them, have. But you've said that they're almost spent so that pretty much indicates, they're entirely different crosses.

I've got one now that started spiking in early December and the first flower is going to open today. It took 4 months. The spike is easily over 2 feet. All my others are on their second blooms on the spikes that grew long after this one started. Go figure.... I'll take pics later.

patti - understand you 100%!

Sandra - that's why I love orchids... the unexpected! I put the two plants in different locations so we'll see how they grow. Both look like they may put out a branch. I already love them!
