Talking My Vanda seedlings

As promised in my other thread about Vanda's I'm posting the pics of my Vanda and Ascda. seedlings. The Vanda is about 3 weeks old and the Ascda. is about 1 week old. the vanda is named V.wirat x V. madame Rattana and the Ascocenda is Ascda. Fuchs Sunglow Orange. The Vanda is doing well. Its growing new roots and it's getting a new leave. The other one is to early to tell.

So those are like shot glass size glasses?
You mean they are 3 weeks out of flask? (The whole process of flasking from seed if these are from seed takes around 2 years or so until de flasked) don't know if you knew that or not lol.
They are adorable though.... Off hand what color will the blooms be on these babies ?
Thanks for sharing them

No they are not 3 weeks out of flask. I ment that I received them 3 weeks ago by mail. I really don't now how old they are, and how long it will take before they bloom. I will post a pic so that you can see how the blooms will be like

normally vanda will take 4 years to bloom from flask. That will bloom in 3 years as it has been deflasked for more than a year. The ascos , i have not much experience as i have not done any ascos cross.

Well then we just have to wait and see. I have to be patient. It's already nice to see them grow.

Willeke, I gotta tell you that it's been really hard to keep me from running right out to buy a vanda and try out your method!

And I have a suspicion I'm not the only one who has resisted vandas because of the very problem your method seems to have addressed!

Well I'm glad to hear that there are so many people who want to give it a try this method. My Vanda's are out of blooms right now. Only the purple one is still blooming. So now I have to wait till I see spikes again. And for the seedlings a little longer. And tuesday I'm expecting my new flasked Vanda from Thailand.

I have decided to start my own experiment with this very interesting growing method, too.

I recently received a Ascd Fuchs Gold as a 'free bonus' with a mail order delivery (size is about a year or 2 from blooming); I have popped it into a glass vase that I have placed in a South window and am following your watering/care directions.

I have usually stayed away from vandeous orchids, but with a free"volunteer", it is the perfect time to give this a try!

Thanks for sharing this culture method and providing such good details and pictures.

Well it's always nice when you get a free orchid. One of my seedlings is a Ascda. Fuchs Sunglow Orange. Maybe its the same only then in yellow. Do you have a pic ot it. Be careful not to wet it to much. Because in the vase it keeps humid a long time. You can spray it everyday, but not to much. Or every other day then you can spray a little more. Good luck.

I have two vandas (well, actually ascocendas) that are similar to yours. I've been growing them in a small glass bowl since last summer and they are doing better than expected. This was an experiment, because I killed my first vanda but I wanted to try again. Btw, I grow my orchids indoors, so I'm not blessed with a greenhouse or warm weather year round, which makes growing certain genera, like vandas, difficult but not impossible.

I'm glad to hear that yours are also doing fine. I also have to grow my orchids indoors. I only occasionaly put them oudside with good weather. But I can not leave them oudside day and night, Bacause weather can change rapidly here in Holland. Good luck with the Ascda's.

I missed your original thread and had to go back and find it. After seeing your Vandas I went out and promptly pulled mine out of it's basket. I have had it for about 1.5 years now, and it's been growing rather slowly, in a vanda basket, with spanish moss all over the basket to try to help hold moisture for the roots. However, bringing it inside during the winter was HORRIBLE and I could never keep it moist enough. I managed to cut off old roots and soaked them, shoved them into the vase slowly but surely. I have it now soaking for a few more minutes, and I sat the vase back in the wooden basket so I can still hang it out of the way. Thanks so much for the awesome idea! I wouldn't have ever thought of that myself. I hope it helps with my Ascocenda Adisak Blue

I hope it will help your Ascda. It's never nice when your orchid is doing bad. Be sure not to wet it to much. As I mentioned in the the post a few places above this one. Because in the vase they keep moist much longer then in a basket. Good luck with your Ascda. Keep me posted.
