Are you keeping this guy warm enough? Spots look like they may be because the plant is being grown in a lower temp than it likes. If outdoors is the best you can do in winter, you may just have to settle for spots on your plant. Looks to me like another couple of years would be good before trying the topping technique. Your plant is not nearly leggy enough to me. Remember that topping usually sets the plant back a bit while it is getting the remaining roots to do the whole job, and sometimes the topping will cause the loss of a few leaves, and you will be right back where you are now. Are you sure all the lower roots are dead, and not just old looking?
