Like Arlene said - just a change in environment from where the plant was grown can cause it to drop buds. I have found plants which are grown in my environment can spike and produce flowers OK, but this same environment is NOT initially OK when I place a new blooming plant in it. Many of the orchids take time to adapt to your conditions.
