You're really close, but go the other way. I think of the crown not as where the roots grow, but where the leaves grow (upward). And if I saw some black gunk (how do you like my technical terminology
) around that area I would douse it with hydrogen peroxide(directly into the growing point of the leaves) and dust with cinnamon. All this should be done before noon to give the plant plenty of time to dry before dark
