split vanda leaves

My new blue vanda came and some of the leaves are split along the natural crease. Is this common? Also, a sticky clear substance is at the tip of the split leaves. Good or bad? I have it in a southeast window. It came in a pot. How much/often should I mist it? When does a flower begin to develop and how do I detect it? It gets no sun after 11 am through the summer. Should I get a wonderlite or other grow light for it? How tall do these things grow? This is a "mature plant." How long can I expect to wait before seeing my first blue bloom? How do I know when to water? It is planted in coarse bark and I can't feel any dampness, so how do I know if it is dry? Can you tell I'm a newbie? I'll appreciate your help. Priscilla
