I meant to tell you your mom's orchid is the Phalaenanthe variety, which means it is what is considered a Phalaenopsis-type dendrobium. It's care is different than the nobile-type Dend.
Also try the skewer method of watering. As it is the growing season for Dends, it will probably need to be watered more frequently.
