| Get all of the old compost out. If you don't, it will continue to decompose at a different rate than what you can see and possibly rot some roots. Soak the root ball for 20-30 minutes before you plan on this surgery; it will make it easier to remove old medium and make the roots less likely to break.
Hint: tweezers work well!
