| I have stakes on only one orchid a Beallara which I discovered has such heavy flowers it will bend the spike. The stake is more for support of this spike. It's the first time I have seen a need for a spike. My phals just dangle and I think it's more 'natural' for them.
I have seem people use tie wraps to support a pole on the outside of the pot. The spike is then attached as needed. If the spike exceeds the stake, just use a heavy gauge wire to support it a bit by creating a tunnel around the spike which the spike lays on.
