| wow i have five orchids. two i know are phaleanopsis, i think one is a miniature hot pick speckled and the other is a gorgeous white one.
i also adopted an orchid that was dying on my ex and his wife's hall table after their anniversary gift stopped flowering. I think it is a dendrobium. the base is kind of swollen, but the leaves are like tiger lily leaves and come from the base.
i also picked up a couple for 5-10 bucks from a florist, but i have no clue what they are. they seem to have some kind of papery binding between the leaves and some just taper to the top, but they are all the 'same'.
i am intrigued by what i am reading about keiki. my phal came with one flowering spike which lasted 4-5 months. then it died back only half way. i didn't cut it back to the base, but to one inch above where it died. the second year i got a stalk which began as three little leaflets, then put out a flowering spike, which eventually died back to the leaflets which are still green about 13inches above the base of the plant on a green spike, which is putting out another little spike, but there are no air roots. the second year i also had a spike from the trunk of the plant, between them there must have been twenty blooms. This year, i got senile and snipped a spike by mistake. it has finally turned brown two inches up, and i am getting another green spike. these things are weird! and i love the flowers. The miniature i got for Mom last year looks to be throwing up a spike this year,so they must be happy in my east facing window, which is well shaded in the summer by trees outside my window.
what are they and how long do the keiki take to put out roots? |
