I don't grow dends brookn but I can console you on puppyhood.
You have done a wonderful thing by rescuing this puppy. He will grow out of this stage and your orchids will live to see another spike.
In general, if I have something very torn up or ragged looking I do surgery. It has only happened a few times to me, but if a part of an orchid seems to be more of an energy drain than an asset, I cut it off.
