| I am not an expert. But I think you should keep/replace (with fresh) moss. You could add little pieces of bricks but not at the expense of the moss. Is the coal mined?
I think fossil coal has some 'tar' and may not be suitable for orchids. I am sure others will shed some light on it soon.
I am also sure they will agree on keeping the moss.
