If it is a spike then yoru Phal is blooming out fo season. Usually the spikes are initiates in Autumn when there is a good day-night temp drop and they bloom in winter.

I have noticed that Phals tend to spike in leaf crotches or at least along that asis of the plant like the little green bump on the left while roots often come form other places like the one on the right.

We;ll just have to wait and see what happens.
