Yes, snails & slugs are nocturnal. The old snail bait, metaldehyde, I have learned recently only knocks out the snails, leaving them exposed to the sun when it comes up. Well, in a greenhouse with shade, that is not a very effective way to kill snails. I had been using beer in dishes prior to discovering DE, and it works to attract my slugs, and if the dish is deep enough, they will drown. However, I watched a particularly large slug stretch its self out full length to reach the lip and start to leave the bowl. Slug mechanically done-in, and beer moved to larger bowls. I knew the DE was working, because I kept up the beer for a while and collected zero slugs after the DE was laid down heavily on the floor. I will occasionally use beer again to assess the snail/slug population in my GH. Just found a bush snail in a plant being repotted from EOoM. I trust Mike to have bug free plants, but I have to be always prepared for his snail/slug problems.
