that depends on what genus of plant it is. if it's a phal, then you're correct. but most (if not all? not sure on that one) other kinds of plants will not do this. they bloom once from a spike, then the spike dies back.

ETA: will some paphs and phrags do this? i'm thinking of mayres's "twins" paph he showed at his office with the 3rd bud developing. is that the same kind of situation as a phal pushing out more buds at the end of its spike?
