THANK YOU EVERYBODY! for your great pictures. I showed the hubby and actually got him to agree to let me put up a small/medium shelving unit with some lighting. The best part is it will be in a visible location in our home instead of down in the basement.
I am going to do some more research on local pricing for shelves and lighting. I am still on the fence about whether to go with t5 vs t8, but that is a discussion for another thread (or a 100 threads). Anyway, I just wanted to thank everyone for sharing.
