Sharyn - I have grown phals for several years in medium bark successfully, but have come to the conclusion that there is a better media available if you are willing to experiment a little and see what works for you. The trick is finding a media that retains more moisture but that you can learn to control to the extent that you do not rot the roots. Have you read results of the university studies in this link?
